Appetite for Destruction

Hey folks, it's J.D. here. To answer the three most common questions tossed my way recently:

1. Yes, just extra cheese.
2. Yes, I believe the Leafs will make the playoffs.
3. No, the album isn't finished yet. (Sigh)

After reading a Rolling Stone article about Guns 'n' Roses making their first record (and the unbelievable trashing of the house they were staying in), we decided to spend a few days out of town while working on the record. The result was a dangerous brand of comedy that ended with the near death of a microwave and several pieces of Pepi's pizza flying out of a 9th story window towards an enviornmentally unfriendly vehicle in the parking lot.

The album is receiving similar treatment. Things have been tossed out, smashed and built in a newer, better shape. New material has been brought in and tested and some of it stands taller than the first 26 songs that we recorded. The result is, sadly, that the record won't be finished until the years end since we have 30 songs recorded and (depending on who you talk to) 25 of them are going on the album. This is incredibly complicated math because we're not sure how to make 25 turn into 12. If anyone has NASA's phone number, we may need to put in a call.

We're all getting a bit punchy and impatient, but we stopped that the other day when our producer, Rick, used the words 'world class record.' It's easy to forget that this is forever. As such, decisions have to be weighed with a good deal of care and thought. We're just in a rush to put out a record to promote. He's not. He's listening to us play better and play more confidently. And he's not going to stop recording us until he thinks we should stop. AND we keep bringing new material in. Maybe we're just sick. Maybe we're addicted to recording. Maybe we should seek help. I don't know. We debated not playing the new stuff for Rick, but he's just a very open and patient man and he said of course we should audition the tunes. So we played two new songs on a couple of acoustics (the way we write 95% of the time) and ten minutes later, he was scheduling time to record them next weekend. It's ridiculous and wonderful, because a lot of really good songs are going to be left without a home on this record. But - as Rick keep saying - this is a good problem. So, shut up and sing. Fair enough.

At least now we know what we're getting you all for christmas.

j.d.
